Dark Romance

Yesterday afternoon I got around to watching the PBS version of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. I read the book about a million years ago and remembered the basic (very basic) premise. A re-read is now necessary, as I had forgotten so much before watching the movie. The story is amazing; extremely emotional, very dark, and few love stories have left me so depressed at the end. (Not to mention the amount of rainy scenes out on the English moors, coupled with the actual rain that began to fall outside my window as I neared the end of the movie. How appropriate.) I will say, however, that in my opinion, depressing stories can be just as good as happy ones (and sometimes even better). This one makes you feel strongly for all the characters (perhaps barring one, since he was SUCH an asshole...), that despite how crappy I felt at the end, I will probably end up buying the DVD in order to watch it on other dark, dreary, rainy days (which I like so well) and get lost in that whole era of literature. (Which I also like so well.) Not all love stories need end in total bliss. If they did, the arts would just be boring.
