Still thinking about that ending...

I'm a sucker for foreign films, and partial to Italian ones in particular. This afternoon I caught a showing of Io Sono L'amore, or I Am Love. I know I most often write about the music and emotional effects of films (which, in my opinion, are two of the most important parts), but the combination of those two elements in this film were explosive. Perhaps the most effective scene was one in which the family in the film is in a hospital to learn of a tragedy (I won't give any more details than that), and there was no sound. Nothing. After a while you could hear the muffled background noise of the hospital, and then one of the characters crying. I feel like most movies would have loud, dramatic music at such a time, but this scene was so aurally empty that it worked just as well as any song or score. Then there's the ending, (which has some of that loud, dramatic music), and you figure out what's going to happen, but when it does, you're not sure what to think. I'm still thinking about it, hours later. Another mark of a well-made film. This one's intense.
