Mystery in Victorian New York
I don't usually read mysteries; in fact, I can't even recall at the moment one other than the one I'm posting about that I've read. I walked into the library one day and saw Stefanie Pintoff's new murder mystery, Secret of the White Rose, and grabbed it. It was a true instance of judging the book by its cover (which we all do all the time, anyway), and in this case, I judged right. Not only the title caught my eye, but the cover art, a close-up of a Victorian-style street lamp on a warm yet muddled green background, I found to be really pretty. After reading the inside cover flap, I decided to give it a try. This book has convinced me to check out more mysteries in the future. Pintoff does an excellent job of not only bringing the New York City of 1906 to life, but had me guessing who the murderer was up until the end. The story becomes more and more complex as it progresses, and the little details, even the smallest ones, give the story that much more depth. It was a pretty quick read, too, and was a nice change of pace for me!
