Check it out...three posts for November! Yay!
Tonight I went roller skating for the first time in at least ten years. I went with some of my orchestra friends, and most of us hadn't skated in a very long time, so I'm sure we were a source of amusement for everyone else at the rink. I was never that good at it to begin with, so lacing up a pair of roller skates (which are quite heavy, thank you) and then trying to stand up was frightening enough to begin with, let alone trying to actually skate around the rink. At least I got my one wipe-out out of the way during my first lap. Ha ha. I will have a bruise the size of a small apple on my knee in the morning. Peer pressure forced me to continue, and so there I was, stiff-legged and unsteady as little 7-year-olds skated circles around me like race cars. But after about an hour and a searing case of shin splints (something I'm sure I will also feel more acutely in the morning), I had gotten the hang of it and it was actually rather fun.
Most of today was spent preparing food for tomorrow. It'll be a small group this year, only my grandfather and my mother's two youngest brothers. Thanksgiving plans can be rather sporadic in my family. Some years we see my dad's side, other years part of my mother's side...and this year just happens to be smaller than usual. It'll still be good, though; food, family, and football. Whoo. Me + my mother + the kitchen = works of genius. ;-)
And finally, before I go off to bed...I finally finished reading Bryce Courtenay's The Power of One. It was, to put it simply, a great story. I will definitely watch the movie again now, not having seen it since freshman year of high school, and which is what prompted me to track down the book in the first place. The amount of detail was amazing, and I can only hope to ever write something so intricate and be able to keep track of it all and tie it all together at the end. My next reading venture will be a bit lighter, as after that book and all the reading I've had to do for my classes, I think my brain needs a bit of a break. I've chosen the Christmas Box trilogy by Richard Paul Evans. I read the first two books, The Christmas Box and Timepiece back when I was in middle school, and even did reports on them for one of my classes. I have not read the third installment, The Letter, and only recently discovered it. I figured it's almost Christmas, and I wanted to re-read the first two before moving on to the third anyway, so now is as good a time as any. They should be a good set of books for the end of the semester and into winter break.
Happy Thanksgiving to all! : )
