Big Fish

After attending a lecture on Ernest Hemingway, put on by the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park, (which was fabulous, by the way), I decided it was high time I actually go and read some Hemingway. I admit that I had only read one of his short stories way back in high school, and don't even remember which one it was. (For shame!) So I picked up The Old Man and the Sea from my library and...wow. For such a short book, he packed an enormous amount of detail and emotion in there. (And after all that...I won't say it...but I was often frustrated!) Simply put, it's about an old man out at sea fishing, and even though I've never been fishing, nor do I care to, I still felt for the character and became emotionally invested in his plight. I think that really says something about an author. Engaging someone in something in which they don't have much of an interest is no small feat indeed.
