In my continuing attempts to keep up with current YA literature, this weekend I read Nothing, by Janne Teller. I can think of two words to describe this story, those being "fabulous" and "macabre". There are a few similarities to Lord of the Flies, which I didn't care for when I first read it in high school (freshman year), but can appreciate more now and should probably read again, especially after reading Teller's book. It gets extremely psychological and morbid, and these attributes are what really help get the message across. In short, I could say it's about finding the meaning of life. That's the easy route, though, because the way the young characters question it and try to prove their point is what sets this story apart from others that may have a similar message. Creepy at times, but well done.
