On the train ride home yesterday evening, I finished reading Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. I hadn't previously read much of his work, only The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as seeing the play (way back in high school) and the film adaptation with Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon. I loved that story, and had bought a copy of The Picture... a while back, which consequently sat on my bookshelf for a long time before I decided to pick it up. It was amusing, thought-provoking, and clever. I think a lot of it's themes are still relevant today, as our society also has its obsessions with youth and beauty. Wilde's book covers those issues without preaching, and it's very entertaining. I have to read more of his work!
Just for fun...an awesome Chicago band called Company of Thieves has a song called "Oscar Wilde", and after reading this book, I think there's a lot of cool connections there. Here's a video from a concert in Chicago:
