This weekend was rather low-key, but on Thursday night I was able to attend a CSO performance, which was a wonderful week-night alternative to class or homework. : ) The program was beautiful, consisting of Mozart's Symphonies 25 and 34, and Haydn's Symphonies 39 and 89. These four pieces went very well together, and made for a very relaxing concert. I especially liked the two Haydn pieces, neither of which I was familiar with before the concert, and Mozart 25 is an old favorite, and one which I performed with my orchestra last season. (It's also the piece played at the beginning of Amadeus.) It was all very pretty, and made for a nice night out, a good break from work, school, and everything else. : )
Here are a couple clips:
Note the pause after the first phrase...very effective.
If you listen to a full performance of each, listen to the Haydn first, followed by the Mozart--and listen for how the end of the Haydn symphony blends into the first movement of the Mozart. It really does. : )
